The name Aalst was first named in 868. It was the home of Dirk Martens, a student of Geradus de Lisa who introduced book printing in the Netherlands. The largest carnival in Belgium is held in Aalst each year. You can visit the church of St-Martinus (XV) which houses a painting by P.P. Reubens. There is a direct rail connection to Brussels, taking only 23 minutes, Paris is reachable by train in just 2 hours while the Eurostar brings you to London in 3 hours. Close to main motorways and rail connections to Ghent, Bruges and Ostend.
